On major feast days we have special liturgies drawing not only on our NZ Prayer Book, but the wider ancient heritage of the Church. Join with us on Advent Sunday, Christmas Carols, Christmas Mass, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, Trinity, St John the Baptist Festival (mid winter), All Saints and All Souls -(when we commemorate those from the parish who have died during the year). Get the latest service information on our Monthly Notes page and music lists from that page..   Some fifth Sundays we also hold a non-Eucharistic service with contemporary content.

St John's values tradition in its worship style, yet also often we include modern hymns where these are suited to the theme of the day. We plan services carefully. We still use Hymns Ancient & Modern, along with Hymns for Today, and several new NZ publications like Faith Forever Singing and Alleluia Aotearoa, and often resort to even older publications for the right music for the occasion. (eg Russian Kontakion for All Saintstide). We rarely if ever sing banal, mindless choruses.

The congregation sings the Mass - Kyries, Sanctus and Benedictus, Gloria and Agnus Dei, even when the choir is not present. In this next year we will be adding the Sursum Corda and sung Prayer of Consecration, and newly written for St John's, the NZ Acclamations.

A feature at St Johns we find most important, is a high level of preaching of sermons based on modern Biblical scholarship and inter-faith insight, and this is received by a well read and thinking congregation.

In the coming year, with our new vicar, we hope to make the fifth Sunday an opportunity for some alternative services. Perhaps some Taize', and even a choral Evensong.
